In his popular book Born to Run, Christopher McDougall searches for the answers to common problems faced by many runners. Along his journey he becomes aware of the Tarahumara people from northern Mexico, famed for their ability to run great distances despite the searing heat.
The secret to their endurance? Iskiate – a drink made from chia seeds.
Well, that and practice. They run. A lot.
Now we couldn’t find any science backing the claims that this drink is guaranteed to enhance performance, but what is true is that chia seeds themselves pack a healthy punch of goodness, that many people swear by this drink, and that it is SUPER easy to make.
A 2-tablespooon serving of chia seeds has 5g of protein and 10g of fibre, helping to keep you full for longer. It also boasts around a quarter of your recommended daily dose of magnesium, as well as being rich in calcium and iron. They have also been linked with easing digestion.
So, does it enhance your endurance, you be the judge. Here’s the easiest recipe you’ll ever see:
2 tbsp chia seeds
Add about 2 cups of water and let it sit for a few minutes (it will become gloopy – this is ok)
Add lime juice (or lemon) for flavour
Add honey (to sweeten)
Go running!
